Boy Scout Value Compass

History of the
Boy Scout Values Compass

In 1998 Eagle Scout William G. Marshall had the honor of addressing the William G. Marshall Class of Eagle Scouts in The DuPage Area Council (now Three Fires Council) of the Boy Scouts. After reflecting on the fact that the Eagle Scout rank is the only rank that a Scout retains for life, he shared with the new Eagles how the values that he learned in Scouting had influenced both his life, and the way that he made decisions. He then introduced his new Boy Scout Values Compass and explained to the new Eagles that whenever he had to make tough ethical decisions in his personal or business life, he would reflect on the Values Compass. He then encouraged them to adopt the Boy Scout Values Compass as a means of finding True North in their lives. He shared that just as a Boy Scout Compass helped to prevent them from getting lost in nature, the Boy Scout Values Compass would help to prevent them from getting lost in life.

The Scout Oath The Scout Motto The Scout Law The Scout Slogan

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;

To help other people at all times;

To keep myself physically strong
Mentally awake,
And morally straight.

Be Prepared. A Scout is Trustworthy,
Loyal, Helpful,
Friendly, Courteous, Kind,
Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty,
Brave, Clean and Reverent.
Do a Good Turn Daily.
