With some poetic liberties, Rainbow Trout Ranch is the setting for my first book, Rich Shareowner, Poor Shareowner. Located in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado, the ranch is in the heart of historic Kit Carson mountain man country. It is a wonderful place for a family vacation. The ranch staff, facilities, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, food, and children’s programs are outstanding. The three generations of the Van Berkum family are wonderful hosts. My family has enjoyed many active, but relaxing summer vacations at RTR.

This Dude Ranchers Association is an excellent resource for locating the dude ranch experience that is right for your family. They have a quick search feature for dude ranches located near National Parks.

There are many very special parks in the National Park system, but Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the grandest to me. As you will see, the mountains and wildlife are spectacular, but the hiking, camping and horseback riding among it all is spectacular.

Colorado has many scenic state parks with fine campgrounds and hiking trails. But five miles up the road from our home is our favorite family campground in Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Great family facilities, breathtaking views, and equally breathtaking hiking are all available at 8,000-9,500 feet.
