ETF Table

February 2009

It has been difficult to keep track of over 840 ETFs in existence. The following table is a short list developed from over 840 exchange traded funds (“ETFs”). It is a useful starting point to select ETFs in favorite sectors. It will be updated semi-annually. Most of these ETFs have good liquidity in that they trade at least 250,000 shares a day as of this writing, although a few do not, and were included only due to the potential attractiveness of having an ETF in the sector that they represent. In many cases there are other ETFs that cover similar indices or sectors. For example, IVV is an ETF that tracks the S&P 500 just as the SPY. This table does not contain funds that short stocks as I consider them to be betting against both Americans and the fundamental purpose of free enterprise in a democratic society. HOWEVER, I am comfortable shorting bonds and commodities, and some of these types of ETFs have been included. They typically carry the word “short” or “inverse” in their names, because they move inverse to their underlying index. For example, ETFs that sell bonds short (i.e. give you the ability to gain if interest rates rise) are included. Additional ETFs and details of ETFs are available on your broker’s website or on the ETF sponsor’s website.

Recall that ETFs are unmanaged portfolios of stocks in given sectors or which track a particular indices.

Also included are some ETFs nicknamed “Ultras” or “Double”. CAUTION: These ETFs use leverage in most cases to perform twice the move (up or DOWN) of the underlying index that they are replicating. The value of Ultras is either the ability to get twice the exposure to an index for $100, or to get further portfolio diversification by investing $50 and getting $100 of exposure in the Ultra index, while investing the other $50 in another stock or ETF.

I recommend monitoring graphs of these ETFs to identify trends using many of the same Investor’s Business Daily technical indicators that you look for in individual stocks. When you find an attractive ETF, drill down and identify the stocks in that ETF that are doing well. You may discover that some of the individual stocks will be better investments than the ETF, albeit with more concentrated risk. Check sector ETF valuations by reviewing the PEG ratios and debt level (less than 25% of capital) of principal stocks in the ETF.
